Knoxville — The American Veterinary Medical Association recently presented its Animal Welfare Award to Dr. Eric Davis, an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Davis was recognized for his work in bringing animal care to Native American reservations and other remote areas of the United States and Central America.

“Native American reservations have a number of social problems, including large stray dog populations,” Davis said. “There’s a tendency to not think about their welfare.”

Davis’ group included clinicians and veterinary students, who worked to spay and neuter stray dogs, and administer rabies vaccinations to them.
