KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Erin E. Read, a Hume-Fogg Academic High School graduate, enters the University of Tennessee-Knoxville this month as a 1999 Tennessee Scholar.

Read, daughter of Robert J. and Julie N. Read, plans to study biological sciences. The Tennessee Scholar award, which pays $4000 a year for four years, is one of UT-Knoxville’s top academic scholarships. It is given for academic achievement, creative abilities, and involvement in school and community activities.

Read was a National Merit Finalist, and a member of the National Honor Society, German Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She was also a member of the Environmental Action Club and co-coordinator of Hume-Fogg’s recycling program.

Tennessee Scholars participate in honors courses during their freshman and sophomore years and in an honors seminar every semester. In the senior year, they complete an original project under the direction of a faculty mentor.
