KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 1,400-plus fall graduates of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville will hear the board chairman of the National Geographic Society at their commencement Sunday.
Gilbert Grosvenor will speak at the 3 p.m., Dec. 20, ceremony in Thompson-Boling arena.
A breakdown of the 1,022 candidates for undergraduate degrees by college shows: 81 in agricultural sciences and natural resources; 435 in arts and sciences; 193 in business administration; 84 in communications; 39 in education; 77 in engineering; 94 in human ecology; five in nursing; two in social work; 12 in law.
The breakdown of graduate degrees is: 358 masters; one doctor of education; 80 doctor of philosophy; and three education specialists.
Grosvenor also has served as president of NGS and editor of the 100-year-old National Geographic magazine. In 1986 he helped UT-Knoxville form the Tennessee Geographic Alliance, a partnership to improve geography instruction for state school children.
