KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Gilbert M. Grosvenor, board chairman of the National Geographic Society, will deliver the fall commencement address Dec. 20 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Dr. Bill Snyder, chancellor of UT-Knoxville, said commencement ceremonies are scheduled for 3 p.m. in Thompson-Boling arena. Anyone interested in Grosvenor’s talk is welcome to attend, Snyder said.

Grosvenor, who also has served as president of the geography society and editor of the 100-year-old National Geographic magazine, has had a long association with UT-Knoxville’s geography department.

Working with Dr. Sid Jumper, former head of the department, Grosvenor in 1986 helped form the Tennessee Geographic Alliance, a partnership between UT and the geographic society to improve geography instruction for state school children.

In 1996 the society provided $250,000 to match a gift to the geography department by a Knoxville couple, Harrison and Robbie Livingston. The gift helps fund population studies and research.
