KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — College graduates in the information age must be more alert to the accuracy of what they hear, see and read, a newspaper executive said at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s summer commencement Friday.
”More knowledge means more opportunity,” Roger Kintzel, publisher of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, said. ”With the explosion of information comes the responsibility of paying closer attention to what you see, what you hear and what you read.
”You must be willing to sort out the good from the bad to determine what is useful, credible information. All information must be put into its proper context.”
Approximately 1,400 students received graduate and undergraduate degrees at Thompson-Boling arena.
Kintzel told the graduates that surviving a crash landing of an airplane in the Rocky Mountains taught him to say thank you to parents, family, coworkers, friends and others who contributed to his life.
”I hope you never have the experience that I had, but I encourage you to use what I learned. Understand and acknowledge the great gifts you receive when you receive them.”
