KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — TRW Foundation is supporting international travel for students in the University of Tennessee’s language and world business program.
A $5,100 foundation gift will be used primarily for undergraduate student travel scholarships, said Winkie Ilic, associate director of the UT-Knoxville program. A portion of the gift will go for program improvements.
TRW-Koyo, an American-Japanese joint venture, operates an auto parts manufacturing plant in Vonore.
”Besides completing a full language major and international business minor, students enrolled in the program also must study or work abroad,” Ilic said.
The program’s 120 students usually are abroad for a year and then complete a domestic internship with a company that trades internationally, she said.
Students in the 11-year-old program choose to study one of eight languages. They also minor either in international business, international agricultural economics or international retail merchandising.
Graduates of the program are working in Taiwan, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Germany and Spain, as well as with companies in the United States, Ilic said.
Ilic also is a member of the board of directors of the East Tennessee International Commerce Council and she recently was appointed to the program committee of the International Business Council of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce.
