KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Master of business administration students at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville have taken first place in a case competition at Tulane University.

Six teams in the competition argued the feasibility of a U.S. telecommunications company entering a joint venture with a cable television firm in Argentina.

The UT-Knoxville team was coached by Eddie Armbrister, a third-year student working on a joint MBA-doctorate of jurisprudence degree.

Members included Phil Meledjiev, Doug Rainwater, and Russ Story, all second-year students, and Mark Meigs, a first-year student.

“The quality of our MBA program and the way it prepares students for complicated, real-world issues was obvious in the competition,” Armbrister said.

Teams from the University of North Carolina and Rice University finished second and third, respectively.

Emory University, Tulane, and Southern Methodist University also participated. The event was hosted by Tulane and Hollywood Marine.

Each team had six hours to develop their recommendations for a panel of judges. UT won with a 20-minute computerized presentation, written financial information, and a 10-minute question and answer session.
