KNOXVILLE–A University of Tennessee-Knoxville associate professor of classics has been named the state’s top foreign language educator.
Dr. Christopher P. Craig is recipient of the 1997 Jacqueline Elliott Award from the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association.
Marie Miller-Whitehead, who chairs the association’s awards committee, said Craig was recognized for organizing workshops to help students and K-12 teachers study classics, foreign languages and cultures.
The award, named for the former UT-Knoxville French language professor who retired in 1990, will be presented Nov. 21 at the association’s national convention in Nashville.
Craig, a UT-Knoxville faculty member since 1980, received the bachelor’s degree at Oberlin College in 1974 and the doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. He has authored numerous publications and is an authority on the Roman orator Cicero.
At UT-Knoxville, he co-founded the University Studies Interdisciplinary Faculty Colloquy on Rhetoric and received the University Studies Award for Fostering Interdisciplinary Scholarship in 1994.
Craig authors tests for Tennessee’s Junior Classical League academic competitions and is a liaison with Secondary School Latin Programs in Tennessee, which informs Tennessee high schools about the importance of the classics.
