KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The English department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville has awarded fellowships to nine East Tennessee teachers for study in the department this summer.
The fellowship awards honor the late Carolyn V. Martin for her contributions to the English department, the university and education at the high school and community college level.
The awards, supported by the John C. Hodges Better English Fund, are made to selected English teachers in Tennessee schools and community colleges.
Hodges was head of the English department from 1941 to 1962. He authored the Harbrace College Handbook, possibly the most widely used college text in the United States.
Summer fellowship recipients, their schools and towns are:
Ruth E. Lewis, Gatlinburg-Pittman High School; Carmen D. Blair, South-Doyle High, Knoxville; Tina R. McGuire, Johnson County High, Mountain City; Jane S. Gulley, Jefferson Middle, Oak Ridge; Janie DelCour, Sequoyah High, Madisonville; Vickie Pointer, Wartburg Central High; John E. Ross, West High, Knoxville; Amy J. Lantinga, Fulton High, Knoxville; and Deborah Rice, Oliver Springs High.
Martin began teaching at UT-Knoxville and continued in the English department until her death in 1980.
