Five new Torchbearers, including one from Knoxville, were recognized Wednesday at UT-Knoxville’s Honors Banquet.
Stephen R. Kennedy, a chemical engineering major from Knoxville, was among those receiving the university’s highest student award for leadership and service.
For the first time this year, Torchbearers received a special medal for their selection.
Other 1997 Torchbearers are: Kelly Birdwell of Nashville, Chandra Hayslett of Memphis, Jason Little of Old Hickory, and Ellen Zeringue of Brentwood.
Vol quarterback Peyton Manning and five other students received citations for campus leadership and service.
Kennedy, a Whittle Scholar, chaired the Undergraduate Academic Council this year and is a member of the academic committee of the university’s board of trustees.
Birdwell, also a Whittle Scholar, chairs the Student Government Association election commission and ethics committee, and for two years was a member of the UT board of trustees health affairs committee.
Hayslett, current editor of UT’s student newspaper, The Daily Beacon, is majoring in African-American studies. She is an SGA senator and director of SGA’s Diversity Affairs Committee.
Little is completing his term as SGA president. He is a student counselor to the UT president and last fall was editor of Tennessee 101, the faculty evaluation handbook.
Zeringue is SGA vice president and president of the Student Senate. She has been active in the Panhellenic Council and in her sorority.
Manning was recognized for his work with school Read-a-thon programs and DARE drug prevention programs.
Also receiving leadership and service citations with Manning were: Dawn Duncan, Swiftwater, Pa., president of the Graduate Student Association; Mary Anne Peine, Sevierville; Judson Perry, Evans City, Pa., formerly of Sevierville; Teresa Rogers, McMinnville; and Michael Wittkamp, Virginia Beach, Va.
The Lady Vols basketball team, All Campus Events Committee, Team Vols Leadership Board and the Student Government Association were recognized for contributions to campus life.
