KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Knox County have scheduled an audit to examine campus recycling.
Trash samples will be gathered, sorted, weighed and recorded 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., April 11, at Presidential Courtyard Cafeteria, Smokey’s Cafeteria in the University Center and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
Audits will be conducted 1-5 p.m., April 12, at Ayres and Clement halls, Glocker Business Administration Building and Andy Holt Apartments.
“The main thing is to get information out to students and let them know where the university is right now in terms of recycling,” said Shelly Galloway, a UT-Knoxville senior in human services who is helping coordinate the effort.
“This audit will show in which areas our recycling efforts are doing well and where they need to be strengthened.”
Galloway also interns at Knox County’s Solid Waste Division and Waste Resource System, a Knoxville recycling company which has a recycling contract with UT-Knoxville.
UT-Knoxville generates about 12,000 tons of garbage annually, she said.
The solid waste audit is being conducted by 20 students who are members of the Green Audit Committee. The audit is sponsored by UT Physical Plant and the Knox County Solid Waste Division.
