KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Helping improve day care services for local business employees is the goal of a new University of Tennessee program.

Dr. Jan Allen, UT-Knoxville associate professor of Child and Family Services, said the university’s Knoxville Area Child Care Information and Referral Service is working with Levi Strauss & Co. to help improve services at 20 providers who care for children of Levi Strauss employees.

“Family-friendly companies are quickly becoming a sign of the times,” Allen said. “More and more, companies are increasing their awareness of family issues and are investing in improving the quality of work-family life for their employees.”

Allen said UT will help the care providers identify strengths and weaknesses in curriculum, classroom management, learning, child behavior and other areas.

The training will allow the day care centers to better market and advertise their programs, Allen said. UT hopes to provide the service for other companies in the future, she said.

The Area Child Care Information and Referral Service provides information and training for families, corporations and child-care providers in Knox and 13 surrounding counties.
