KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee’s “God’s Country,” named one of the nation’s seven best college theatre productions, will be performed April 19-20 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The center’s American College Theatre Festival, in its 28th year, chose “God’s Country” and six other productions from among 900 entries.
“To be selected to attend the national festival is an honor coveted by many, but enjoyed by few,” said ACTF director John Lion.
The UT play examines recent events — the Seattle trial of a paramilitary group, the death of the group’s founder, and the murder of a Denver talk-radio personality.
“God’s Country” originally was performed last Nov. 3-11 in UT-Knoxville’s Carousel Theatre. It also has played in San Francisco and UT’s Clarence Brown Theatre in Knoxville.
In “God’s Country,” 12 actors play 40 different characters.
Jessica Neemann, a member of the “God’s Country” cast and a second-year Master of Fine Arts candidate, is one of 16 national finalists for the Irene Ryan National Acting Scholarship.
Ms. Neemann receives a $500 scholarship and an opportunity to compete for a $2,500 scholarship in national competition April 21 at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theatre.
The six other schools selected to present plays at the Kennedy Center festival are UCLA, Roosevelt University in Chicago, Collin County College in Plano, Texas, Boston University, Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio, and the University of Idaho-Moscow.
