KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries and the Knox County Public Library System signed a partnership agreement today to develop cooperative programs.

“We’ve actually worked with the Knox County Public Library System for many years in an informal way,” said Paula Kaufman, dean of UTK Libraries.

“This represents a milestone in formalizing that relationship and planning some projects and activities that will improve the services and resources for our combined constituencies,” she said.

Examples of mutual projects might include joint purchases of materials, collection expansion, and technology development, she said.

“Both of us are federal depository libraries. As the government moves to put things into electronic format, there are a lot of support issues that we’ll be better off figuring out together.”

Signing the partnership agreement with Kaufman were:

* UT-Knoxville Chancellor Bill Snyder.

* Patricia Watson, Knox County library director.

* Charles Davenport, president of the public library board of trustees.

Snyder, Schumpert, Kaufman and Davenport made remarks.
