KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Nashville-based law firm has pledged $100,000 to the University of Tennessee’s 21st Century Campaign for a professorship in the UT-Knoxville College of Law.
The Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis Professorship of Law is being established by one the state’s largest law firms.
Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis has 75 attorneys, including 18 partners and associates who are graduates of the UT College of Law, said George W. Bishop, member of the firm’s executive committee and a UT law graduate.
The college seeks to raise $6 million as its part of UT’s $250 million 21st Century Campaign. More than $200 million of the goal has been received or pledged.
“Waller Lansden has enjoyed tremendous success in recent years,” Bishop said. “The quality of the education provided by the UT College of Law has been one reason for that success. The firm is pleased to have an opportunity to give something back to the UT College of Law.
“To start the 21st century with a Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis Professorship will be gratifying for all the attorneys at the firm.”
UT Law Dean Richard Wirtz said the gift is the first by a law firm to establish a professorship in the college. It will be used to honor an outstanding teacher-scholar, he said.
Gifts to the college support centers for advocacy and entrepreneurial law, fund professorships and scholarships, and expand services of the legal clinic and law library. Gifts also provide for educational resources in the new law building, now under construction.
