KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee Law School is holding a memorial service for Col. R. McDonald Gray Jr., 4 p.m., Nov. 21, in the Lindsay Young Auditorium in UT’s Hodges Library.
Col. Gray, who served 30 years in the U.S. Army, taught at UT from 1963 to 1977. He died Sept. 8.
Gray came to Knoxville after a distinguished career that included assignments as a member of the War Department general staff, staff judge advocate of the Third Army, the Sixth Army, the 18th Airborne Corps and the V Corps, chief of the international law division for the European Theater of Operations, and in Dwight D. Eisenhower’s headquarters.
He was awarded the Legion of Merit three times, the Bronze Star, a number of commendation medals, the Belgian Order of the Crown, the Netherlands Order of the Orange-Nassau, and the European Theater of Operations Ribbons with five battle stars, among others.
Born in Charlotte, N.C., Gray received degrees from the University of North Carolina. He was a member of the track and football teams and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
