KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Dr. Jack N. Barkenbus has been named director of the University of Tennessee Energy, Environment and Resources Center, UT officials announced.

Barkenbus has been acting director of the center since 1991, during which time the amount of its annual research awards grew from $6 million to $10 million. Founded in 1973, its former directors include John Gibbons, now science adviser to President Clinton, and E. William Colglazier, executive officer for the National Academy of Sciences.

Barkenbus also co-directs the UT Waste Management Research and Education Institute, a multidisciplinary research organization.

Barkenbus came to UT in 1987 after serving as senior scientist and deputy director of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Institute for Energy Analysis. He has headed research projects relating to arms control, state energy policy and nuclear power.
